…at least it should be. Here’s proof it doesn’t need to cost an arm and a leg.
To say 2020 has been a trying year would be an understatement. In fact, I hear there’s a movement afoot to classify it as a swear word.
If you’re like me, you’re getting a little restless at home. Your dreams are populated with tiny boxed Zoom faces and you’ve baked enough sourdough to choke a horse. Once, you held your breath at the grocery store so long that you almost passed out.
And like scores of other restless people, you might be looking for something to do besides starting another new Netflix series or getting your butt kicked in a game of cribbage with your significant other.
Why not read a book?
While you’re at it, you might as well make the space around you as comfy as possible. I often read in bed, the most comfortable place on the planet, but there’s no guarantee I’ll get more than three pages in before drifting off. When I want to put a good dent in a book I’m reading, you can find me curled up in an armchair near a window filled with natural light.
This year after my husband and I blew our summer travel budget on a sleek new patio and tackled a ton of small jobs inside the house like purging junk drawers and putting up art we’d been meaning to hang for years, I decided to spruce up our reading nooks. Yes, we have two, which might sound excessive, but a reading nook can be any spot with comfortable seating and ample light to read by.
You don’t need to do any extensive renovating to create a cozy reading nook.
To ramp up the cozy factor at our house, I donated some outdated blankets and replaced them with a couple of bright new throws. I got mine at Anthropologie when they were on sale.
When I was looking for inspiration for my own reading nook I stumbled on a ton of amazing spaces showing that a reading nook certainly doesn’t need to be elaborate. Here, a few well-placed pillows and a blanket next to a window make for an inviting spot to read. I’d save the wine for afterward, though!
This unused alcove was transformed into a quiet place to tuck into a good book. A small table with an inexpensive reading light would take it to the next level.
A reading nook can be just about any quiet place anywhere in the house. Here’s another one. A warm blanket and a pair of thick socks go a long way to making this spot extra cozy. A fluffy cat doesn’t hurt.

Pull up a blanket and get reading! With so many great books out there (including mine 😉) and an abundance of time spent at home, 2020 just might be the perfect year to ramp up your reading nook game.
